LBTimes, DDJ hold training on news reporting, photojournalism for senior high school students

Assistant Professors Jyasmin Calub-Bautista and Kabzeel Sheba Catapang facilitate the critiquing session for the photojournalism outputs during the afternoon session of the training on news reporting and photojournalism.

Forty-six participants, composed of students (41) and teachers (5) from Bambang Senior High School (14), Lalakay Senior High School (14), and Los Baños National High School (18) attended the whole day training on news reporting and photojournalism at the UP Los Baños College of Development Communication on September 11, 2017.

Faculty members from the Department of Development Journalism (DDJ) including Assistant Professor (aProf.) Kabzeel Sheba Catapang, DDJ chair; aProf. Ricarda Villar; and aProf. Jyasmin Calub served as the resource persons for the discussions on data gathering, news writing, and photojournalism, respectively. Catherine Bucu-Flores, a university extension associate and LBTimes associate editor, served as the overall training coordinator.

Organized by DDJ upon the request of Bambang SHS, the activity was composed of lecture and workshop sessions. The morning session focused on data gathering and news writing discussions and workshop while the afternoon session was devoted to photojournalism discussions and a critiquing session of the participants’ outputs.

The first training-workshop for senior high school students is part of the efforts of the Los Baños Times and DDJ to promote development journalism in school publications and to encourage students to become part of the community newspaper’s network of community collaborators.
