In celebration of Women’s Month, the UPLB Babaylan held a free HIV screening and educational discussion on March 14, as part of its series of activities at the Reading Nook Cafe from March 12 to 14. The free HIV screening was held from 1 to 5 in the afternoon, in collaboration with the Municipal Health Office of Los Baños and PROTECTS UPSCALE of Pilipinas Shell Foundation Incorporated. According to the event organizers, a total of 6 people were able to get their HIV status checked. Free condoms were also given to participants and passersby.
The free HIV 101 educational discussion was held at 7:30 in the evening and aimed to debunk some of the common questions that surround the transmission of HIV. Mx. Jan Russel L. Olangca, a member of the HIV Advocacy Team of the Young Advocates for SRHR (YAS), discussed the principles and common modes of transmission of the virus, its common entries of infection, and the difference between HIV and AIDS, emphasizing that they are not one and the same.
Olangca also tackled topics for the prevention and treatment of HIV. For prevention, he introduced YAS’ pleasure-based messaging ABCDE Approach, which stands for “Awareness of PrEP and PEP, Be sex positive, Condom and Lube, Don’t share needles, and Early Detection,” an altered version of Department of Health’s ABCDE Approach. For treatment, he discussed antiretroviral therapy (ART) for PLHIV, and the difference between pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). With PrEP being taken before potential exposure and PEP being taken after exposure. Olangca also mentioned institutions where some of these treatments are available, such as SAIL Clinic Calamba and Love Yourself Incorporated. He then ended his discussion by encouraging participants to have their HIV statuses checked to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
According to the DOH-Center for Health Development IV-A, a total of 22,142 persons are living with HIV in the CALABARZON region as of September 2024, while up to 38,400 individuals are projected to be affected by HIV in the region. Cases continue to rise among individuals aged 15 to 24.

The event ended with a lasting emphasis and empowerment on the rights of women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and the youth to their bodily autonomy and reproductive health.
