17 candidates showcase their talents for Miss Los Baños

Los Baños, Laguna – 17candidates representing the 13 barangays of Los Baños showed their talents last night for the Miss Los Baños Talent Night.

Among the representatives are Arnie Delideli (Mayondon), Jarmaine Acebedo (Bayog), Margielyn Icarro (Lalakay), Jane Frances Palis (San Antonio), Maricar de Luna (Maahas), Julie Anne Baltazar (San Antonio), Louisse Ann Perez (Timugan), Aira Mae Trinidad (Batong Malake), Roxanne Siman (Bambang), Lovely Garcia (Bambang), Beverly Hintural (Bayog), Victoria Banagan (Timugan), Jielleen Banatlao (Lalakay), Rubelyn Malitic (Bayog), April Rose Dichoso (San Antanio), Mikki Pamulaklakin (San Antonio) and Jonnadel Dongsal (Timugan).

Overwhelmed ako kasi ako yung nag-iisang nagrerepresent nung barangay namin and flattered kasi nandoon ang support nila (I was overwhelmed because I am the sole candidate representing our village, and the support they’ve shown me is flattering),” said Arnie Delideli of Brgy. Mayundon. She also added that when joining pageant you are really expecting to win but not for popularity but for experience.

“I won’t expect too much [on coronation night], simpleng maging member lang ako dito masaya na ako,” shared Mikki Pamulaklakin of Brgy. San Antonio.

The judges for the said event are Prof. Joan Luna of UPLB Department of Human Kinetics, Mr. Jose Emmanuel Lingao of McDonald’s Vega Center, Mr. Ever John Guce of Globe Telecom, Ms. Emma Izon of Philippine High School for the Arts and the chairman of the panel of judges, Prof. Naomi Enriquez of UPLB Department of Human Kinetics and Philippine Dance Sports Association.

The criteria for judging are execution (2.5 points), originality (2.5 points), choreography or musicality (2 points), projection (1 point), costume (1 point) and overall impact (1 point).

According to Ms. Twila Torres, the coordinator of the event, Miss Los Baños was originally a part of the Bañamos Festival but was rescheduled to focus on the flood affected barangays. “Since this is Christmas and we wish to give the people little happiness, merriments, festivities, the municipality… decided to do it here since because of the Habagat parang it’s not a proper time to celebrate,” added Ms. Torres.

Miss Los Baños, now on its eleventh year, is a part of Paskuhan sa Bagong Los Baños. The swimming competition occurs 8 am today and the coronation night on December 15.

3 UPLB students commemorated at Faith Rally

Los Baños, Laguna – A faith rally  was organized by the UPLB University Student Council at the CAS Fair 2012 in commemoration of students Vicky Reyes, Mark Lorenz Valdez, and Kevin Lagadon.

Vice Chancellor for Instruction Oscar Zamora in his opening remarks talked about moving on in the spirit of Christmas. “This could happen to anybody. Let’s be prepared. Youth is not a guarantee,” Vice Chancellor Zamora reminds the students. Zamora also added that the events have shown the Los Baños spirit.

Messages from the friends and fellow students were made. Regret was one of the central themes of the messages. They also talked about their fond memories with their late friends. After the messages, there was a short prayer made by USC counselor Arthur Holt together with the lighting of candles and release of white balloons.

Abby dela Cruz, USC Vice-chairperson and Officer-in-charge, says that the faith rally was made to challenge the security system in the campus.

Vicky Reyes was a student who was murdered in her home in Biñan, Laguna last November 19. Mark Lorenz “Enzo” Valdez and Kevin Lagadon were found dead at the Flatrocks, Mt. Makiling Trail last December 6. Police reports say Valdez and Lagadon’s death was an accident.

UPLB Cagers triumphant in Chairman’s Cup 2012

Los Baños, Laguna- The UPLB Men’s Basketball Varsity Team unleashed its full potential as it convincingly beat Team Yellow, 77-66 to capture the Chairman’s Cup title at the Copeland Gymnasium of UP Los Baños yesterday.

Team captain Gian Vergara led the balanced attack with 12 points while sophomore point guard Arvin Dela Peña added 11 in the team’s victory. The UPLB men’s squad opened the game with 9 straight points and never looked back. The varsity team sustained a double-digit lead until the 4th period and were able to fend off a comeback attempt by the Yellow Squad.

The Chairman’s Cup 2012 was organized by Mr. Vir Marilag of the Department of Human Kinetics. The participants were UPLB constituents, like faculty members, staff and community service brigade (CSB) members. Four teams participated in the competition: Team Yellow, Team Green, Team White and the UPLB Varsity Team. The UPLB Varsity Team bested the field with a perfect slate of 5 wins overall.

The Chairman’s Cup was organized to prepare the men’s squad for a tougher competition this upcoming State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) tournament slated in January 10-15, 2012 in Mindoro.

The UPLB Men’s Basketball Varsity roster for A.Y. 2012-2013 will be bound for Mindoro for SCUAA 2013.

SK and 14K Lakas ng Kabataan celebrates first Youth’s Night

Sanguniang Kabataan (SK) and 14K Lakas ng Kabataan held yesterday the first ever Youth’s Night at the Municipal Covered Court. It showcased the different talents of youth from the 14 barangays of Los Baños, Laguna.

According to Councilor Julius Moliñawe, president of the 14K Lakas ng Kabataan, Youth’s Night was organized for the youth to be able to have a venue for expressing themselves through their talents. Also, according to Adelbert Hornilla, Chapter Master of Brgy. Timugan, the event was an effort for the youth to avoid illegal drug use.

The event was participated by the 14K  Lakas ng Kabataan all over  Los Baños. Established in June 5, 2012, 14K has now grown to almost a thousand members. Mayor Ton Genuino, the Chairman Emeritus of the organization, made the event possible.

The event showcased different performances by the members of 14K Lakas ng Kabataan. It was then followed by parlor games, party, and awarding ceremony.

“Youth’s Night is more than talent shows and bonding, it is a celebration of the unity of the14 barangays”, said Dona Alborida, SK Chairman and coordinator of the event.

Youth’s Night is part of the Paskuhan in Los Baños, a month-long celebration which started in December 8 and will end on December 22.

Himig Pasko held last night

(Updated as of 10:39am) The Lopez Children’s Choir and the Christian School International Choir (Glee Club) won the young and adult category of last night’s Himig Pasko 2012. The event started at 7pm in the Municipal Covered Court.

Organized by Ms. Jenette Palisoc from the Civil Registry Office, Himig Pasko is a choir competition involving schools and organizations. It is part of the month-long celebration of the Paskuhan sa Bagong Los Baños.

This is the fourth year that the Himig Pasko was held. Pattricia Legaspi, Los Banos’ SK Chairman and host of the event, said  “mas tinangkilik yung Himig Pasko ngayong taon. Yun nga lang mas okay kung mas maraming contestants.

The participating groups were divided into two categories. The first group was composed of young competitors aged 8 to 14 years old from Los Baños Central School Children’s Choir, CSI Elem Choir, Brigada San Antonio Children’s Choir, and Lopez Children’s Choir.

On the other hand, the second group was composed of adult competitors aged 15 years old and above from Los Baños Community National High School, Los Baños Seventh Day Adventist Singing Group, and CSI Choir (Glee Club).

The first, second, and third placers received their prizes amounting to P10,000, P7,000, and P5,000, respectively.

LB holds third Musikohan Brass Band Competition

The Sinag Katipunan Drum and Lyre Corps (DLC) from Pasig City, Metro Manila, and the ACES Drum and Bugle Corps from Tagaytay City were the champions in the recently concluded Musikohan Brass Band Competition 2012 for the Drum and Lyre Category and Brass Band Category, respectively.

The said competition was held yesterday morning at Paciano Rizal Park, Barangay Timugan. The participating bands marched along the streets near the park and at 10 AM, they proceeded to the contest proper.

The prizes for the first, second and third placers were P70,000, P50,000, and P40,000, respectively.

Maganda ang performances kasi maraming participants mula sa iba’t ibang bayan.,” George Bryan De Lara, an employee at the municipal hall, commented.

A total of 14 bands from different towns including Daet, Camarines Norte and Pangasinan competed; nine for the Drum and Lyre Competition and five for the Brass Band Competition.

The Musikohan 2012, now on its third year, is part of the Paskuhan sa Bagong Los Baῆos.
