Technology Forum: “Handa KNB sa oras ng kalamidad?”

with reports from Kimberly Salamatin,  Arron Lucius Herbon and Christian Rieza

A technology forum was held at the New College of Arts and Sciences auditorium of the University of the Philippines Los Banos on September 11 during the Syensaya science festival for the benefit of barangay officials, municipal government staff, students, and other community stakeholders.

The activity aimed to disseminate information regarding calamities, as well as necessary preparations and response during calamities.

This year’s forum focused on calamity in light of the recent experience with typhoon Glenda that affected many parts of the country and caused heavy damage to property particularly in Los Banos.

Dr. Primo Garcia, chair of the Techno Forum Committee 2014, said that the forum is very timely because the affected people and communities find disaster preparedness relevant and necessary.

Maraming naapektuhan noong Bagyong Glenda noong July, particularly sa UP Los Baños.

Barangay officials are the primary target of the techno forum because of their capability to effectively communicate information to their respective constituencies.

“Mas madali kasi kapag barangay officials ang nakakaalam kasi pwede silang magkaroon ng sarili nilang seminars at maituro nila ang mga natutunan nila sa kanilang nasasakupan,” Garcia added.

The forum featured Ms. Bernadeth Lucillo, chief meteorological officer at the National Agromet Station of PAGASA – UPLB, who lectured on the Hydrometeorological profile of Los Baños, Laguna.

The Philippine Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Act of 2010 was also discussed by Mr. Elvis Cruz, assistant regional director of the Office of Civil Defense of Region IV-A. The talk emphasized the importance of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management (NDRRM) plan in responding, recovering, and in the rehabilitation process concerning disasters and calamities.

“NDRRM is everybody’s concern. We can minimize disaster risk by becoming more responsible citizens even in our little own ways by getting involved in the NDRRM efforts of the government,” Cruz stressed.

Finally, Mr. Martin Q. Imatong, LGU Disaster Risk Reduction Management consultant, delivered a lecture on the possible disasters that could be experienced by the Los Baños community such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami, and typhoons. Mr. Imatong discussed on the precautionary measures that could be done by the community people for disaster preparedness.

The participants found the forum interesting and informative. However, according to Eng. Ruel Tanqueco, one of the participants, it would have been better had they been given materials or visual aids for reference during the discussion and for future use.

The forum was organized by LBSCFI in cooperation with its partner organizations namely: Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU), Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB), Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration (OVCA), Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP)-Laguna, Department of Education (DepEd), and Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The techno forum started several years ago to showcase technological advances to the people. It focuses on agriculture, water technology, and other innovations that benefit the local community.

Los Baños to hold SyenSaya 2014 in September

by Delfin Laforteza, Public Information Officer, Municipality of Los Baños

The Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. (LBSCFI) steering committee decided to move SyenSaya 2014 from August 6-8 to September 10-12 after assessing the damage of typhoon Glenda last July 15. Moving SyenSaya to a later date will give more time for the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), the host institution, to fully repair some facilities and clear the debris within the venue.

Wonderama, an interactive science learning exhibit, will be held at the Copeland Hall of UPLB during the three-day festival. This exhibit will be participated in by most of the members of LBSCFI. A techno forum on the hydrometeorological profile and disaster preparedness of Los Baños is scheduled on September 11 at the UPLB’s CEC (Continuing Education Center) auditorium.

Parents attend LB Nutri Council, BIDANI nutrition class

by Earl Gio N. Manuel

“Proper food is the key to a healthy family which is one of the most important foundation of the country,” this is according to University Research Associate Belinda A. Lalap Barangay Integrated Development Approach for Nutrition Improvement (BIDANI), which is based in UP Los Baños during her lecture about proper nutrition at the Los Baños Central Elementary School Canteen last July 27.

“Susi sa kaunlaran ang kalusugan at nutrisyon.” Buong pusong tinuturuan ni Belinda Lalap ang mga dumalo sa Lecture on Proper Nutrition For School Children.

The said event was entitled “Lecture on Proper Nutrition for School Children”   which is part of the celebration of the Nutrition Month and a program of the Municipal Nutrition Council (MNC) partnered by the Department of Education,  Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), and  BIDANI to teach parents on proper nutrition for their children.

The participants were composed of about thirteen (13) Los Baños residents, 12 mothers and one father from  Barangays Malinta, Baybayin, Timugan, Anos, and Bambang.

The lecture aims to teach the parents on proper way of feeding their children and the right foods to set on the table.

It was started through an opening message lead by Edith Lozano, BNS form Brgy. Anos followed by the discussion that was made by the University Research Assosciate of  BIDANI-UPLB and they were  Lalap who talked about Guidelines on proper Health and Nutrition and Pamela A. Gonzales who discussed about  Effects of Malnutrition.

BIDANI is a program which aids the nutritional needs of the people in the community and this was funded by Netherlands to be established on different States Universities and Colleges in the country on 1978. The Netherlands supported BIDANI financially for almost ten years that is why 46 SUC’s had BIDANI including UPLB.

After ten years of funding,  only few from the 46 SUC’s continued the BIDANI program. One of the universities who still has BIDANI is the UPLB which is still serving the people of the community in terms of health and nutrition.

At present, BIDANI-UPLB is now an extension project of Institute of Human Nutrition and Food in the College of Human Ecology which gives service to people from different areas about proper nutrition.

BIDANI-UPLB has spearheaded many programs like counseling program for mothers, training/ workshop for BNS and lectures about health and nutrition.

“We are bringing the innovations of UPLB about health and nutrition in the communities at we believe that the true indicator of development is a healthy nutrition”, said by Gonzales.

The event became effective through the participatory discussion lead by the lecturers and through the active participation of the citizens who participated to the program.

“I knew that it is really important that we are feeding the right foods to our children in breakfast, lunch and dinner and it is good also to maintain the cleanliness in serving the foods”,said Mylene Paco, 30 year old mother from Brgy. Malinta.

In relation with this news, there will be a Culminating Activity that will be spearheaded  by  the Municipal Health Council of Los Baños as an ending of the Nutrition Month which will be held on the Municipal Covered Court on July 31.
